Memories of Don's parents

Clarence was born in 1901, he paid $35.00 for his first second hand car.  After he retired from his job with the city, he put another 20 years employed at the Anthon Post Office and retired again at age 86. After that the town folks could set their clock when Clarence went to get the mail.  He always had a beautiful garden and yard.  When asked on his 100th Birthday what had changed the most over the last 100 years he replied "The people they don't walk anywhere anymore." Clarence and Dorothy loved to dance and went a few times each month till Gpa was about 95. Dorothy was born in 1908 and renewed her drivers license at 96 with no problem. One of the things my grand daughters take after their Great Grand Mother  is that Dorothy did drive fast! She was the best cook and good listern, we didn't need self help books just a good visit with Gma Davis and the common sense she used  kept us all out of a lot of trouble over the years.  Their daughter Geraldine died of Cancer at about the age of 64.  Don's sister Wilma lived in Sioux City and every Sunday would drive the 25 miles to visit her folks, rain or snow.  Wilma was always there if they needed her.  They lived in their home until Clarence was 102 then moved into a nursing home their last year together. In Dorothy's later years she would always say who ever came up with the idea we have to eat 3 times a day.  But she always could put a wonderful meal on the table.  They were a wonderful couple and loved by all.

Message from Kelly 5/8/2007

A Soldier's Message to Mom by Kelly Seibert 5/8/07

I joined the military

at a very young age,

I signed up for adventure

and to make a good wage

I knew you'd be worried

that's how it's always been,

even when I was 16

and would go out with my friends

But to serve our great country

as my forefathers have,

I've always wanted to be special...

just like my dad

When I put on my uniform

I smile with such pride,

I've made my decision

now I'm in for the ride

I have no regrets but

I admit that I'm scared,

I'll miss all of my family

and all those who care

I realize the risks

I understand danger,

if I don't make it back

please don't live with anger

Please bury my body

or my ashes down deep,

have a service of laughter

and don't cry when you sleep

Rejoice that I was able

to do what I did,

fight for my country

so others might live

So enjoy this fine nation

don't sit around and cry,

my spirit still lives

it never did die

I'm living through you,

dad and my brothers;

sister, please watch

over our mother

Don't let her mourn and

grieve through her life,

help her to be the best

mom, sister, and wife

Remember me by giving

others a hand,

especially those that came back

from far off Iran

Their lives have changed-

their bodies too,

I'll feel so much better

knowing they have all of you

So remember me with love

and not just with anger,

spread joy in your lives

and be kind to a stranger

My only regret is causing

you pain,

I'm so sorry for that

I take all the blame

Please feel my hug mom

as I dry away your tears,

you have lots more love to give...

no more living in fear.

Log Cabin Thanksgiving Pictures of family in 2009

Great Pictures of the fun day we had at the Log Cabin at Russ and Kelly's.  The food was so good and cooked or reheated on the old Wood Stove.  Russ made homemade Ice Cream and we all were Thankful for the best year.
When we were kids our folks always made my Dad's mother Suet Pudding from 1930.
2 Cups of chopped suet
2 Cups of bread crumbs
1 Cup of Raisins
Salt and seasoning  (nutmeg Cinn)
4 or 5 Eggs well beaten
3tpspoon melted butter mixed with eggs and 2 1/2 cups of milk and 3 Teaspoon Baking Powder.
Cooked that in a steamer for hours then Mom made a sauce of
4 Cups boiling water
1 Cup Sugar
3 teaspoon flour
Large Lump of Butter
Vanilla Flavoring.
Maybe next year we will make this....
Only mistake I made was I didn't take more left overs home.  Don ate everything for lunch today, guess I'll have to beg for more cause it was so good. Thanks Keri, Kayla, Russ & Kelly for all your hard work.
Wish you could have all joined us!

You could feel the Love in the room when these pictures were taken.

I stole this picture off Keri's blog. Thanks Keri.

Merry Christmas to All

Kelly made Luke's Hat and whiskers.  It is going to be so fun to have a baby around at Christmas again.
Hope you all have a very Merry Christmas
Love

Stop smoking

After 50 years I'm trying to stop smoking again. I quit for 2 months back in 2001.   Got one of those electric cigarettes and down to about 3 cigarettes a day.  It is hell.  I think about cigarettes now  24 hours a day whereas before only when I wanted one.   The electric cigarettes aren't that bad, if I can only keep Holly from stealing it now, she likes to clean off the little stand by my chair like my cell phone, glasses, ink pens etc.  Wish me luck.

Kayla & Luke 11-1-2009

Luke and Aunt Kayla.  Kayla and Keri made dinner for Kelly's birthday.  How sweet are these two. Luke looks like he is dressed like farmer Gpa Russ today. 11-1-2009

Thanks Keri

THANKS much Keri for the pretty wall paper again.  I have no idea what I was doing wrong.  You are a master when it comes to getting me out of trouble on this site.
Your Mom and I could not find one pair of plastic pants for Luke yesterday while shopping.  Do they sell them anymore????
How did the game go?  Did you find Kayla and get in on the tail gate party?  Have fun while your young!
Thanks again.

Don & Maureen Family Blog

Don & Maureen Family Blog

This site seem to have wiped out the pretty wall paper Keri added last week to my blog. I have tried to install it again but seems I can't read the instructions right, there are only 9 steps to follow. Still I hope you can enjoy the pictures and news and will have new pictures to add later. I have a download to Picturetrail on the side bar so I'm trying to add new pictures and welcome any you have to share. Just email them to donmaur@mebtel.net jpg. format if possible. I want to Thank Keri again for her help in getting and helping me with this site. I couldn't have done it without her.

Beautiful day today, going over to Matt's parents to watch a showing of the pictures taken of Luke and the Generation grandparents and parents. Mike and Sandy both photographers do such a good job - how lucky are we to have their professional skills.

Holly and I had a play date with Luke and Sam yesterday. It is so great to have a baby in the family again. I've never seen Kelly or Russ so happy as when they are around that little guy. Kelly won't let Luke cry for a second. Sandy their dog doesn't want Holly around Luke, (We don't either cause Holly is so big and one paw on ya can knock you over) but we were outside and Sandy refuse to let the other dogs near the baby.

Don took Holly and our neighbors dog (150 lbs) both out for a walk this morning. Tytis(?) is so big but a gentle dog. A bike rider complain about her when she was a few months old and now this dog has to be chained up 24/7 or they will put her to sleep. The bike rider threw rocks at her. We are not to happy with bike riders on our roads out here, on week ends we have gangs of 30 or more riding together down the middle of the road. Tytis still visits us in the evening for a treat then runs back home. She just walks in Holly's door and stand by the treat jar.

Thank you all for your nice words about this blog.

Enjoyed Sunday dinners or Holidays with cousins in Sioux City and summer vacations in Mission Hill S.D with Mom's folks and sister.
Everyone had a job, Jack worked at the Bakery, Jim at the Gas Station, Don paper route, and I worked at the phone company. School was only 3 blocks from home.
